How to access academic journals via the Toronto Public Library

This may be old news to some of you, but it's new and exciting to me.

Of course, not all academic journals are available this way, but the mere fact that some are is great.

Below is the step-by-step process I used to locate an article on Brahms and the variation form in "19the Century Music."

First, log in to your Toronto Public Libray (TPL) account.

Then, begin an Advanced Search.

Enter the title of the journal you want.

When the search results are given, if you're lucky you will see a link for online access or downloading.

JSTOR is a service that holds many periodicals. Earlier, when I simply searched at Google for information, I sometimes found that interesting material was at JSTOR, but visiting it directly only resulted in my being denied access. I think there was a rather hefty sign-up fee. Going through the library gives free access.

You may want to browse through back issues. In this case I've done a search for "Brahms."

Among the search results, I see an article I want to read and, even better, a link to the PDF version (that is, the full article which I can open, print, save on my hard drive, email to friends, etc.).

And here's the full article. Wonderful!
